Testimonials

Crail Community Larder

"They engaged really well with all age groups, and it was brilliant to see how quickly everyone picked up the rhythms. We really appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into creating such an experience."

Other services

One-to-one tuition

If you're interested in solo tuition, we can help - whether you're a novice or an accomplished percussionist. If you don't have your own drum, tell us your height and we'll bring a selection of djembe which you can choose to play. We can come to you, or you can learn in our rehearsal studio.

Drum sales

We always keep a small selection of drums which pupils can buy. But if we don't have the drum you want, we can find it for you. We have contacts in the UK and Africa, supplying handmade, ethically sourced djembe.

Drum kit lessons

If you'd like to learn to play a drum kit, we can help you with that, too. Tell us the style of percussion you'd like to learn and we'll develop a learning programme just for you. We can come to you, but you'll need your own kit. We'll teach you any drumming style from any musical genre.

Regular workshops

Come along to our fortnightly Saturday workshops, hosted in the Howe of Fife. Relaxed, fun and friendly, our regular workshop is open to all ages and abilities. Contact us for details and bookings.

About Drumcall

At Drumcall, you'll learn authentic African rhythms on authentic djembe, handmade in Africa.

We’re a small group of musicians and enthusiasts based in Auchtermuchty in Fife. So you might be wondering how our founder, a Scotsman called Gavin, ended up running djembe workshops.

Over 20 years ago, shortly after graduating from the Musicians' Institute of London, Gavin met a group of African musicians who introduced him to the rhythms of Africa.

Moussa Camara, master drummer of the renowned Fatala drum troupe invited Gavin to study the djembe. Moussa showed him how to play, repair and reskin the instrument.

Gavin’s training continued with the respected musician Magatte Dieng. Magatte played with a range of famous groups, from Youssou N’Dour’s Le Super Etoile de Dakar to the National Ballet of Senegal.

Magatte’s ancestors have been griots - ritual musicians – for generations. Their traditions and rhythms pass through the family from father to son and mother to daughter. Magatte saw griot potential in Gavin and encouraged him to share his teachings with others. Which he now does with pride and passion.

Gavin's latest teacher is Ayodele Scott of the Afro-Celtic dance band, Baka Beyond. Ayo continues to help Gavin expand his knowledge and develop his technique on the djembe, doundoun, bougarabou and tama drums.

Drumcall respectfully draws from this wealth of knowledge and tradition to bring you fun, rewarding workshops, filled with authentic African rhythms.
